Scratch Tests with Diamond Tools on the Innovative Construction Material Carbon Concrete

Concrete is used globally in the construction industry. It is unsuitable for absorbing tensile stresses without reinforcements made of steel. However, carbon steel is susceptible to corrosion and requires a thick minimum concrete covering layer. An innovative new type of concrete, called carbon concrete, offers an alternative to conventional steel reinforced concrete in terms of sustainability, new design possibilities and areas of application.

Diamond-impregnated tools are used for machining this new composite material, just as in the machining of conventional steel reinforced concrete. The grinding process can be analysed in detail by reducing it to a single abrasive grain. This paper presents the influence of the diamond grain shape on the material removal process of both the concrete and carbon phases. The evaluation of the scratch tests is based on process forces and the scratch grooves.
